4 Ways to Resist Temptation

2 Mins read

James 4:7 (NIV)

“Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Temptation is a struggle that all of us face at some point in our lives. It’s a battle between our desires and what we know to be right. In the Bible, we are warned about the adversary, Satan, who seeks to lead us away from God through tempting us. This devotional will explore the wisdom found in James 4:7, which provides us with guidance on how to resist the devil’s temptations.

Submit to God: The first step in resisting temptation is to submit ourselves to God. This means acknowledging His sovereignty in our lives and recognizing that He knows what’s best for us. Just as Jesus submitted to God’s will in the Garden of Gethsemane, we must also surrender our desires, plans, and ambitions to God.

In moments of temptation, remember to turn to God in prayer. Seek His guidance and strength to overcome the allure of sin. When we submit to God, we allow Him to lead us on the path of righteousness, making it harder for the devil to find a foothold in our lives.

Resist the Devil: Once we have submitted to God, we are better equipped to resist the devil. James 4:7 makes it clear that when we resist the devil, he will flee from us. But what does resisting the devil look like in our daily lives?

  1. Know God’s Word: The Bible is our weapon against temptation. Just as Jesus responded to Satan’s temptations in the wilderness with Scripture, we must immerse ourselves in God’s Word. When we know what the Bible says, we can use it to counter the lies and deceit of the enemy.
  2. Avoid Compromising Situations: Sometimes, resisting temptation means avoiding situations or people that lead us into sin. Be mindful of your surroundings and the company you keep. Surround yourself with those who encourage your faith rather than lead you astray.
  3. Accountability: Seek out an accountability partner, someone you trust and can confide in. They can help you stay on the right path, offering support and prayer when you face temptation.
  4. Prayer: Prayer is a powerful tool for resisting temptation. Ask God for strength, wisdom, and discernment. Jesus taught us to pray, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil” (Matthew 6:13).

Temptation is a part of our human experience, but it doesn’t have to lead us down a destructive path. By submitting to God, knowing His Word, avoiding compromising situations, seeking accountability, and fervently praying, we can resist the devil’s temptations.

Remember that God is always ready to provide the strength you need to stand firm. When you resist the devil, you are not alone in the battle. As you draw near to God, He will draw near to you, guiding you through the trials and temptations of life. Trust in His promise, and you will find the strength to overcome the temptations that come your way.
