Christian Mindfulness
Psalm 46:10
Be still and know that I am God.
In this crazy world we live in, it can be difficult to focus on God and avoid distractions. How can we live up to Psalm 46:10 and manage to be still when there is so much going on around us? Can Christian mindfulness even be possible?
Focus on God
Proverbs 4:25
Let your eyes look straight ahead and your gaze be focused forward.
If we want to truly focus on God, we must give Him the time that he deserves. Every day, we as Christians should take time to read the Bible and meditate on its meaning. By taking time and obtaining Christian mindfulness, we can better dedicate ourselves to serving The Lord.
Consider looking up a reading plan that fits your schedule. If you only have 15 minutes, maybe a chapter or two a day would work best for you. If you have more free time in your day and you want to read the entire Bible in one year, it only takes three chapters a day and five chapters on Sunday.
We all have struggles and we all know how unkind this world can be, but the most important thing to remember is that God is in control. He will never give you a situation you can’t handle.
ABC: Always Be Praying
Philippians 4:6
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
The most important thing we can do every day to focus on God and achieve Christian mindfulness is to pray. Prayer is a wonderful thing that helps us achieve a closer connection with The Lord. You probably talk to your best friend every day, even if it’s just a quick text message with a joke or to see how they’re doing. Shouldn’t we treat God the same way?
1 Thessalonians 5:17
Pray without ceasing.
Christian mindfulness is so much easier to achieve when you take just a minute or two out of your day, close your eyes, and say a prayer. It could be almost anywhere, even the bathroom at work or while sitting in your car in the driveway (Please do not close your eyes while driving!) on your way to the grocery store.
Psalm 23:4
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
By taking all of our worries, fears, and pain to God in prayer, He will help us to overcome all of them. There is no obstacle in this world too big or too difficult for us to handle with The Lord on our side. As the Apostle Paul says in Romans 8:31, If God be for us, who can be against us?
Take Time to View God’s Creation
Genesis 1:31
And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.
This step will be easier for some than it will be for others, but admiring God’s creation doesn’t necessarily mean you have to hike out into the wilderness or camp in a National Park for a weekend. The Glory of God is all around us and we can achieve Christian mindfulness by taking a moment to appreciate the wonders that He has made.
Whether you live in Juneau, Alaska, and can see the Mendenhall Glacier in all of its glory from your living room, or if you live in Payson, Arizona, and your view is a rain-soaked patio during monsoon season, there is so much beauty in the world around us. Taking time to appreciate creation can help us focus on God and achieve the Christian mindfulness described in Psalm 46:10.
If you have a little bit of time on a day off from work, taking a drive to enjoy this beautiful Earth is a great way to spend a few hours. It also provides a great place to read the Bible, which you can easily do on your cell phone. Stopping to say a prayer and thanking God for the glory of His creation is even better!
Summary
Luke 9:23
And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
The best way to focus on God and achieve Christian mindfulness is to read The Bible, pray, enjoy God’s creation, or do anything else that works for you. Every person is different and we all have our own techniques for getting closer to God. As long as it works for you, keep it up and God bless!
Here’s that verse again: Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10.
Dear Lord, we come before You to praise You and thank You for this day, and for all of the many blessings that You have bestowed upon us. We pray that You might help both us, as well as those around us, get closer to You.
Thank you for sending your son to die for us so that we might all see the glory of Heaven one day and we pray these things in His name, Amen.
