Politics are one of the most divisive topics that we have to deal with. It is important that God’s children understand what it means to truly pray for those who have been placed in authority over us, even if they’re not the candidate that we voted for. While many people incorrectly assume that God isn’t interested in politics, that’s simply not the case.
Dating back to Biblical days, God has always been keenly aware of who was in authority over His people while they were living on earth. On this Election Day, spend some time in prayer for the candidates and the nation.
Pray These Verses:
Romans 13:1-4 (NIV)
Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgement on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.
1 Timothy 2:1-2 (NIV)
I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people-for kings and all those in authority that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
Pray This Prayer:
Heavenly Father, today I come to You in prayer for this nation. Today is an important day in our country as millions of people will go to the polls to choose the leaders who will be in authority over us in the coming years. First, I pray for the men and women who are going to vote today. I ask that You make Your perfect will known to them and help them understand the gravity of the decisions that they will be making. I also ask that You bless the people who are running. Even if they do not currently know You, make Yourself known to them so they can execute Your will for our nation. I ask these things in the name of Jesus, Amen.
Thank God:
Heavenly Father, thank You for being interested in the elections that are taking place in our great nation. Thank You for caring so much about Your people that You set up rulers and establish kingdoms. Thank You for men and women of God who choose to serve in the political arena. Thank You for the right to have a voice in their election. In Christ’s name, Amen.
