Bible Passages and Prayers for Peace in Ukraine

3 Mins read

We are writing because we are concerned about the war in Ukraine. The conflict results from a long history of deep-set divisions and tensions between the two countries. We do not believe that the solution will come quickly or easily, and many people have been deeply hurt in this conflict.

But even during this deep conflict and pain, we can find hope. We can find it in the strong bonds that families share as they help each other through this difficult time. We can find it in the courage and strength that parents display when they work to protect their children from the violence around them. We can find it in the support that friends give each other as they make sacrifices for one another. And we can find it in the community spirit that people display when they work together to protect their homes and the things that matter most to them.

We hope you will be reminded of your connections to your family, friends, community, and God as you read this. These connections give us strength and hope for a better future where all people can live together peacefully.

Wars and Rumors of Wars

The Ukraine war, otherwise known as the War in Donbas, has raged since 2014. The conflict began when the Ukrainian government attempted to regain control of Ukraine’s southeastern regions that pro-Russian separatists had occupied. Since then, the conflict has left over 10,000 people dead and over a million displaced.

The war between Ukraine and Russia is similar to what is described in Matthew 24:6-7, which says: “And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled, for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.” While this passage does not explicitly reference war in Ukraine, it does seem to predict the world today. We live in a period where we often hear about wars and rumors of conflicts worldwide.

War in Heaven

It is strange to be alive in a world where war rages. These days, we are reminded of that reality as news from Ukraine continues to grow direr. We watch and wait with bated breath for a resolution to the conflict, hopefully bringing peace to the region. It can be nearly impossible for those who live far removed from the situation to imagine how those caught in the middle of such turmoil experience day-to-day life. Yet we must try to bridge that gap and understand what these people are going through as best we can. We can only hope to offer them any support or relief.

A Prayer for Ukraine

Father,
I pray for the people of Ukraine. I ask that you would protect them from the violence and hatred that surrounds them. Give them peace in their hearts, even amid chaos. I pray for Your protection over the strangers and foreigners who reside in their land. May they be treated with respect, and may no harm come to them.

Lord, I pray for the leaders of this country. I ask you to give them wisdom, discernment, and courage as they lead their country through these difficult times. Give them strength as they strive to make decisions that impact many people. Finally, give them a desire to seek You, Lord, in all they do.

I pray for those who are displaced because of war and violence. Give Ukrainians peace as they struggle to find a safe place to call home. Provide for their needs and give them hope in the future.
In Your name, I pray, Amen.
