Doubt and discontentment are two of the most destructive emotions we can experience. Discontentment is often described as a feeling of dissatisfaction. It’s when we compare our lives to others and come up short. We see what they have and what we don’t have, and it leaves us feeling empty.
Doubt is similar in that it’s a lack of confidence or belief in ourselves. We question our abilities, our worth, and our value. We focus on our flaws and shortcomings instead of our strengths and accomplishments. This comparison robs us of our joy and happiness. Proverbs 14:30-A heart settled gives life to the body; however, envy spoils the bones. This verse tells us that contentment leads to life, while envy leads to destruction. - Identify the source. Once you’ve acknowledged your emotions, try to identify their source. What is causing you to feel this way? Is there a specific event or situation that’s triggering these feelings?
- Challenge your thoughts. After you’ve identified the source of your emotions, it’s time to challenge your thoughts. Are your thoughts accurate? Do they reflect reality? Are they helpful? Talk to yourself the way you would talk to a friend.
- Replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Once you’ve challenged your negative thoughts, it’s time to replace them with positive ones. Fill your mind with affirmative statements about yourself and your life.
