Do you have a hard time finding the words to say when you pray? Did you know that many people give up and don’t pray because their minds wander, they get distracted, and they never seem to say all that’s on their hearts?
Sure, it’s challenging to keep your thoughts together, and you may not have the perfect words, but your Father in heaven longs to hear from you. It’s easy for your mind to wander when you’re praying but keep reminding yourself that this time is so precious. Jesus longs to hear from his child.
If you’re a parent of a grown kid, you know how special the times are when they call or come for a visit. If they stay away for long periods, your heart longs to see and communicate with them. Your Heavenly Father feels the same way about you, as he misses those few intimate moments when He gets your undivided attention.
Tips to Enhance Your Prayer Time
If you struggle during your prayer time, here are some tips to help you. These are tried and tested methods that have worked for others. If one doesn’t work for you, then move on and try another one. Soon, you will find your groove, and your time with the savior will be productive.
1. Make a List
Some people find that creating a list of what you want to cover is helpful. If you think that’s too much work, consider that you probably do this when you go to the grocery store as you don’t want to forget anything you need. You cannot remember everything you need to say to God, as the cares of life overload your mind.
2. Keep a Journal
When you go through a rough patch, you need special assistance from God. Maybe you need a new job, a financial blessing, or you’re having a dispute with someone that you want God to help you conquer.
Keeping a journal of these events and the day your prayer is answered can be a real faith-building thing. You can look back over the years and trials and see just how far that Father has brought you.
3. Go Somewhere Quiet
Finding a quiet spot to be alone with God is challenging for some people. Start by turning off all the electronic devices and find a place where you can close yourself off and be alone. No wonder the Bible talks about finding a closet of prayer in Matthew 6:5-6.
There are so many distractions and things that can lure your attention, so tucking yourself away from where you can be with the Master in private is recommended. Have you ever tried to talk to your spouse while kids were hanging around you? You’ll find that it’s nearly impossible. So shut yourself away and get down to business with Jesus.
4. Pray Often and Everywhere
You don’t always need some long and drawn-out prayer, as sometimes you just need to say a few words to your Heavenly Father during the day. Short prayers can be done anywhere and anytime you need Him. In Daniel 6:10-28, the Bible talks about Daniel’s prayer life.
He prayed three times daily, and you can be sure that these prayers weren’t long and drawn out. Find whatever works best for you and do it! Maybe you just need to say a few words when things are going bad, or perhaps you want to stop in the middle of the day just to tell God how much you love Him. As the scripture says in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, pray without ceasing.
5. Seek Him Early
In Psalm 63:1 it says to seek the Lord early. There’s stillness in the morning, and it’s always beneficial to give God the first of your day. Come to Him before you’re stressed out from all that’s happened and your mind is going in 150 directions.
Don’t wait till you’re in bed at night and exhausted, but give Him the first and best of your day. Jesus was your example, and in Mark 1:35, it says that He went out early to pray. In fact, it was so early that it was still dark.
Do you know that old song called “In The Garden?” It talks about coming to the Lord while the dew is still on the roses. This song was written directly from the scriptures, and the writer just reiterates that it’s truly the best time to seek God’s face.
Prayers to Help Your Daily Walk
Here are a few meditations that can help you to enhance your prayer life. If you want to be like Daniel and strive to pray three times a day, you can do anything you set your mind to accomplish.
These prayers don’t have to be overly long or complicated, but you should tell the Father what’s on your heart. When you can’t find the words to say, or you don’t know what to pray, let these be a guide to you.
Morning Prayer #1
Jesus, I need you more today than ever before. I desire your wisdom and grace to flood my life and make me a better person. Thank you for all that you’ve blessed me with, and I am so glad that you gave me another day to live.
Please help me keep my eyes fixed on you as I face whatever comes today. Let me be a witness and show compassion to everyone I meet. Forgive me for my sins and help me overcome the temptation to do wrong. I praise and thank You for all the blessings in my life. Amen
Morning Prayer #2
Lord, You’re my Savior and my Redeemer. You’re a shelter in the time of storm and the Rock of my salvation. I am so thankful that You restore and renew me daily, for, without You, I am nothing.
As I go about my busy day, I ask You to keep Your Hand on my life. Walk with me and assure me that I can conquer anything that comes my way. Please help me not to be distracted by the world but to have hope when it seems like there is none. Allow me to feel Your Presence today and know that You’re nearby. Amen
Prayer at Noon #1
Father, I want to take a moment and thank You that I have food to eat. I pray that it blesses and nourishes my body. Though I am halfway through my day, I ask that you continue to be with me in whatever I may face.
Your Word says that many are the afflictions of the righteous, but I am so thankful that You’ll deliver me. Touch my family and me and give us the strength to keep going. I love and praise Your Holy Name. Amen
Prayer at Noon #2
Holy Spirit, I feel so blessed that I get to sit down to food when so many people in this world are hungry. Thank you that my pantry is complete, and my family isn’t lacking anything. Help me keep an attitude of gratitude as I finish my day, and let me never forget how wonderful You have been to me. Amen
Prayer at Bedtime #1
Father God, it’s been a very long day. I am tired, and my body is weary. I thank You that I could get so much accomplished and spend time with my loving family.
God, I know that some people aren’t as blessed as me, and help me keep myself in check when I get disgruntled and think the universe owes me something. Give me restful sleep and allow me to awaken feeling refreshed and restored in the morning. Amen
Prayer at Bedtime #2
Holy One, as I close my eyes to sleep, I ask for your protection from things I cannot see. Let no evil come to me this night, and I ask an angel to stand guard over my bed to offer protection to me and this household.
Thank you for being my friend, confidant, and provider. I bless Your Holy Name. Cleanse me with the blood you shed for me and allow me to be a Christian. Amen
