God has the power to heal anyone of anything. That is why he is God, and we are mere mortals. Yet, the question of why God heals some and not others is often a human mystery. People who have miraculously recovered from something they did not expect to ask this question all the time.
If you were on the brink of death and God brought you back, you may be asking the single-most frequently asked question Christians and non-Christians alike have: Why? While you are free to ask this question, you may never receive a full and fully realized answer. The Almighty has his reasons for everything he does.
Those reasons include:
- To give a lost person one last chance to choose God, Christ and eternal life
- To renew one’s faith where one had almost completely lost faith and lost hope
- To renew your purpose in life, according to the path God had already chosen for you
- To be present for a major event that He knew would impact someone close to you in such a dramatic and difficult way
- To prevent a catastrophic event, either on a lesser scale closer to home or on a major scale closer to a global level
- To fulfill prophecy, but this reason is very rare
There may be other reasons God has for delivering you from the brink of death and healing you, but those may never be made manifest to you until after death. Since it is up to God to decide if you should know the reasons for your miracle, it is not up to you to question God’s judgement.
Lost and on the Way to Hell vs. On the Way to Heaven
This is one scenario a lot of saved Christians have trouble seeing. They want to know why God would save the life of a dying lost person while letting a beloved person in Christ die. The answer is much simpler than people realize.
God would save the lost dying person before saving the saved person because He knows that the saved person is coming home to live in Heaven with Him. The lost person is on his/her way to Hell and needs one more chance to make the right choice. God already knows if that person will choose Him, and in many cases he/she does choose God as a result of the miraculous recovery. Thus God wins twice; once for the Christian who dies and comes home to Him and again for the soul He chose to save from death who then chose Him and eternal life!
The parable of the “ninety and nine sheep and the one lost sheep” is a prime example of this very thing.
Matthew 18:11-13 states:
“For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost. How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray? And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray.”
If you were lost, dying and on your way to Hell and God knew it, he saved you from dying in the hopes you would be the one sheep he rescued. If you accepted him as Lord and Savior, then his plan worked.
Miracles Performed When Hope and Faith Are Almost Gone
There is another story in the New Testament where a woman with an issue of blood (a disease of the blood) believed that just touching Jesus’ robes would heal her.
The passage of Luke 8:43-48 reads:
And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any,
Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me?
And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.
This same story appears in Matthew and Mark, showing that it has importance. It is a testament to how Christ and God choose to heal for the purpose of rewarding one’s faith or encouraging new believers to come to them.
To Fulfill Your Christian Purpose
To find your Christian purpose, you have to ask God what it is and follow him as he leads you. This is not always easy, and the enemy will lead you astray. The enemy often does this by attacking the flesh and making you sick or weak because he knows that you are supposed to do something for the Glory of God. If you are praying vigilantly, even while you are deathly ill, God will lead you.
You should also know that sometimes God allows Christians to die. It is in their death that their purpose is revealed, and not to them but to those around them. There are many stories where the appearance of peace, joy and a certain radiance in the light of death’s darkness of a saved Christian person that causes a lost soul to come to Christ. If God chose to save you, death does not serve His intended purpose for you. There is something else you must pursue through Him.
To Fulfill Prophecy
God could have destroyed Lucifer and all of the rebelling angels of Heaven. He chose not to because He knew these angels and Lucifer would fulfill their purpose and many prophecies He could foresee. Christ fulfilled the prophecy of the prophets of old that foretold of a Christ child that would bring light and salvation to the world. In Revelations, it is the Anti-Christ that survives death to rise to a position of global power and domination to fulfill the prophecy regarding his place in God’s timeline.
Your miraculous return from the brink of death is not likely to include a fulfillment of prophecy. However, it is a reason that God has chosen in the millennia, past and future, for saving people from death. (To be fair, God doesn’t do the resurrecting of the Anti-Christ, but He allows it to fulfill prophecy of end times.)
Living for God With Your Renewed Life
If you are now a person made whole and a born-again Christian, your miracle is a gift from the Heavenly Father. Regardless of His reason for doing it, you should be grateful. There’s no greater way to show your gratitude to God than by following him. If you still must know why, you can ask in a simple daily prayer.
“God, I thank you and praise you every day for the new lease on life that you have given me. If there is a reason why you want me to live longer, please show it to me. If you want me to fulfill a specific purpose, Lord, please show me the way. Otherwise I will continue to follow you God. Thank you. Amen.”
Remember, God may show you the reason or reasons for your miracle. The only thing he expects of you is that you follow him in faith. After facing death and returning, that should be a fairly easy thing to do.
