A Prayer for Growing in Wisdom

2 Mins read

In the Old Testament, Solomon, the son of David was given the opportunity to ask God for anything in the world. Instead of asking for his kingdom to expand or for great wealth, Solomon asked God for wisdom. He knew that if he was going to be able to fulfill God’s plan for his reign as King, he was going to need Godly wisdom. God was so impressed with Solomon’s request that He made him “the wisest man who ever lived.”

In addition to the wisdom that he asked for, Solomon was also given a larger kingdom and great wealth! Why? Because God knew that Solomon’s heart was pointed Godward, and that his desire for wisdom meant that he would be able to handle other blessings. Today, ask God for wisdom. Doing so will allow you to uncover other blessings that God has for those who want to experience Godly wisdom.

Pray These Verses:
James 1:5 (NIV)
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

Colossians 4:5-6 (NIV)
Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

James 3:13-15 (NIV)
Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven, but it earthly, unspiritual, and demonic.

Pray This Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I know that I live in a society that teaches me that I should pursue fame, wealth, and fortune, however, I know that none of that is worth more than having Your wisdom actively working in my life. Today, I’m asking You for that. Your Word teaches that if I lack wisdom, I can ask You for it, and You will give it to me generously and without finding fault. Help me to be wise in the way that I deal with unbelievers. I know that handling their questions in the wrong way can lead to them losing interest in a relationship with You. Help me to know the right way to answer everyone. Most of all, help me to not pursue worldly wisdom, but instead focus on experiencing the kind of wisdom that You offer. In Christ’s name I ask these things, Amen.

Thank God:
Heavenly Father, thank You for offering me the kind of wisdom that I need in order to live the kind of life that You want me to live. I know that Your Word teaches me that I can ask You for anything I need, and You will provide. For that, I am grateful. Thank You for giving me the wisdom I need to answer questions about my faith and point others to You. In Christ’s name, Amen.
