Moving Past the Shame of the Past

2 Mins read

One of the most powerful tools that Satan uses against the people of God is shame. All of us, no matter how long we have been following Christ, have some painful chapters in our lives that we would love to forget about. Unfortunately, the enemy of your soul seems to exist solely to remind you of your worst moments. God does not view you through the lens of your past failures. In fact, God has forgotten about everything that you have ever done wrong. When we hold onto the shame and condemnation of those moments, we are trying to remind God of something that He has chosen to forget. Today, if you find yourself struggling to overcome the shame of your past, ask God to help you boldly move into your future.

Pray These Verses
Micah 7:18-19 (NIV)
Who is a God like you, who pardons sins and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but delight to show mercy. You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.

Romans 8:1-2 (NIV)
Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives us life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Psalms 103:11-12 (NIV)
For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

Pray This Prayer
Heavenly Father, the weight of my shame is too much for me to carry. Today, I recognize that it’s too heavy because I was never meant to carry it. Unfortunately, I continue to beat myself up because I have allowed Satan to remind me of my worst moments. I know that You have forgotten my sins, casting them as far as the east is from the west. I know that there is no longer any condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus because the Spirit has given me life and set me apart from the law of sin and death. Help me to forgive myself. I know that I am forgiven by You, and I long to experience that in my own life. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Thank God
Heavenly Father, I thank You for being a God who remembers my cries but forgets my sins. I stand amazed at the fact that You are eager to forgive me, eager to pardon my sins, and ready to move on from Your righteous anger. Thank You for taking my sins and hurling them into the deepest parts of the sea. I know that Your grace has absolved me from the worst moments of my life. In Christ’s name, Amen.
